Sony has officially revealed the next 4K flagship from Sony - the Xperia XZ2 Premium. The difference between the Xperia XZ2 Premium and the standard Xperia XZ2 is akin to the difference between a Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium

Xperia XZ2 Premium aims to fulfill our wants: a larger screen, a dual lens camera, a new design, a more powerful hardware. Apparently Sony has listened to the consumers’ feedback. XZ2 Premium comes closely after the release of the standard Xperia XZ2 and since it’s an upgrade it is expected to cost more. We can be sure that it’s going to be comparable to other high-tier smartphones.

Release date and availability

Sony hasn’t confirmed the details on the launch of Xperia XZ2 Premium. Sony has only commented that the model will be available worldwide this summer, which suggests most countries should get it. However, the lack of CDMA support means that some places will not be getting XZ2 Premium.

Design and display

Here’s a summary of what we know about the Xperia XZ2 Premium’s design and display.

  • 8-inch 4K HDR display; inclusion of HDR is great but this isn’t an OLED panel so the contrast is likely to fall behind other current flagships
  • A screen of 16:9 aspect ratio with a bezel that is thicker on the top and the bottom.
  • Design of the Xperia XZ2 Premium is similar with XZ2’s albeit tad bigger; 158 x 80 x 11.9mm
  • Corning Gorilla Glass on the front and back and an aluminum frame.
  • Rear of the Xperia XZ2 Premium is curved for a more ergonomic grip
  • A weight of 236 grams
  • Protection from water with an IP65/68 rating.
  • A dual-lens camera aligned with the center of the phone on the rear, and below that is a fingerprint scanner.

Camera and battery

The Xperia XZ2 Premium has a pretty large 3,540mAh battery. The glass back allows wireless charging; the Qi standard.

Its new dual-lens camera is the first for Sony and it combines a 12MP f/1.6 black-and-white sensor and a 19MP f/1.8 color sensor to create super detailed images. Sony expects the Xperia XZ2 Premium to perform impressively in low light. This is because of the very high ISO 51200 for photos. The front camera is great too, with a 13MP f/2.0 sensor. All of the cameras have 5-axis stabilization.

Recording in 4K HDR video is unprecedented for a smartphone and Xperia XZ2 Premium will give you that satisfaction.

Other features to take note

The XZ2 Premium is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and is loaded with 6GB of RAM. It comes with Android 8.0 Oreo installed.

Capacity starts at 64GB and can be increased by 400GB via microSD. It’s not known if Sony will offer a model with a higher in-built capacity.

There is a number of extra features on the Xperia XZ2 Premium to enhance the multimedia experience. For one, the new X-Reality feature can upscale any non-HDR content for playback. Then there is also the Sony’s Dynamic Vibration System which adds some haptic feedback to gameplay experiences. The in-built stereo speakers should do a great job for both videos and gaming; the loudest yet for Xperia handsets.

Finally, Sony has decided to exclude the 3.5mm headphone jack on this one. That said high-quality audio options with LDAC and aptX HD are available for improved wireless audio. There is also a way to improve quality of compressed audio file e.g. MP3 with DSEE HX.
