Sony Alpha a9 IIは、スポーツ向けのフルフレームミラーレスカメラです。電子シャッターのおかげで、従来のDSLRに見られる「ブラックアウト」なしに20 fpsのバースト撮影を可能にする24MPスタックCMOSセンサーを備えています（メカニカルシャッターで10 fpsで撮影できます）。画像領域の93％をカバーする693ポイントの位相検出と、Sonyの最新のリアルタイムトラッキングシステムを備えています。カメラのISO範囲は50〜204,800であり、完全に拡張され、14ビットの非圧縮Rawを保存できます。また、オーバーサンプリングされたUHD 4Kビデオを記録できます。

a7R IVを連想させる、再設計されたマグネシウム合金のボディは、耐候性があり、5軸の画像安定化機能を搭載し、2つのダイヤルとAFポイントを選択するためのジョイスティックを備えています。大きなEVFには370万ドットがあり、傾斜3インチLCDはタッチ対応です。a9は2つのSDカードスロット（両方ともUHS-IIメディアをサポート）に加えて、ギガビットイーサネットとUSB 3.2ポートを備えています。ソニーは、5GhzバンドをサポートするためにWi-Fiシステムを更新しました。カメラは最大7セットのカメラとFTP設定を保存でき、複数の写真家が同じボディを好きなように使用できます。
