La Nikon Z5 è la fotocamera mirrorless con attacco Z full frame Z entry-level dell'azienda. Ha un sensore CMOS da 24 MP, stabilizzazione dell'immagine a 5 assi e un sistema di messa a fuoco automatica ibrido con rilevamento sia umano che animale. Sebbene la qualità costruttiva non sia allo stesso livello della Z6, la fotocamera è ancora resistente alle intemperie. Lo Z5 ha un mirino elettronico da 3,6 milioni di punti e un display touchscreen da 3,2" inclinabile e due slot per schede SD che supportano velocità UHS-II.

Lo Z5 può acquisire video 4K/30p, anche se con un ritaglio di 1,7X; Il video acquisito a 1080 utilizza l'intera area del sensore e non ha ritaglio. Non ci sono modalità ad alta velocità (ad es. 120 fps) sullo Z5. La fotocamera è dotata di prese per cuffie e microfono.

La Z5 è alimentata dalla nuova batteria EN-EL15C e supporta USB PD, che consente di alimentare la fotocamera con una batteria portatile. La stessa impugnatura MB-N10 utilizzata da Z6 e Z7 può essere utilizzata su Z5.
